On May 13, 2016 we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Scottish Studies Foundation at our annual Scot of the Year Award event during which we paid tribute to this year’s recipient, Canadian author and Nobel Prize winner, Alice Munro, whose Scots ancestry can be traced back to the Scottish Borders.
This video of the speech give by Author and Publisher Doug Gibson was captured during the event by Scottish Studies Foundation director Doug Ross.
Douglas has been entertaining people all over Canada from coast to coast to coast since he published his book Stories about Storytellers in 2011 and followed it up with the sequel Across Canada by Story. It was in his career as a publisher with Macmillan of Canada that Douglas first came into contact with Alice Munro.
And it was 30 years ago -- in 1986 – when Douglas left Macmillan to launch his own imprint-- Douglas Gibson Books at McClelland and Stewart. Alice Munro followed him there and in that same year he published Alice’s The Progress of Love --the very first Douglas Gibson Book.
Douglas is former Board member and was our 2005 Scot of the Year.
